You can be an amazing artist and not be able to earn a penny because you don't draw anime or fan art.
Decided to post this in my post-DA search rage.
I like my character Verden a lot. I didn't do so well in drawing him this time around, I sort of made him look very young- but that's alright, I suppose.
Verden's old. He's been a vampire for over three millenia, and understandably, has forgotten most things that once defined his life. One of those main things being his family; at one point, he had a wife, and he had children. Now, several thousand years later, all he remembers is that he once had such a thing. For Verden, it's like trying to remember exactly what you did on the Thursday of February 10th two years ago. Like remembering that time when you were two, and had a Jacobs ladder.
I wouldn't go so far as to say he's lonely, but he's tired. He knows that he's going to live forever, and he's accepted the fact that no one will be able to follow him into eternity. He doesn't really get attached to people anymore, as it's a difficult thing to do when you know they're going to die in what, to him, is a very short amount of time. He's recluse and quiet.
Verden is Suka's physician in my story. His bad eye sight and bad hip really don't make any sense for a vampire to have; but I like to think that just because a person is turned, doesn't mean they're suddenly perfect beings. Verden makes mistakes, and to be technical, he's senile, and well aware of it. He jokes about the dust and cobwebs in his brain. He can't see without his glasses, and can't walk without a cane. It doesn't cause him pain anymore, because he doesn't feel it, but remaining upright can be a little difficult at times. Without the cane, I mean.
Wee, original art from an original artist!

Right now DA is nothing more than a brothel for good artists to go and undersell themselves in order to promote and make some spare $ between jobs.
ReplyDeleteI totally feel you with the dislike of all the anime on there but what really bothers me is when BAD anime gets seen over the good art out there. Still, I've talked about this alot with many artists around Sheridan and the general opinion is the same.
If you want to make money on DA all you need to do is draw Anime/Manga, Furries or Porn. There are good artists who turn over a dollar without doing that but at the same time it's extremely hard to get your stuff to shine out in an ocean of piss.
I know whatcha mean about DA. Honestly, one of the things I love most about DA is the photography. Of course I like the actual drawing/painting type art as well, but for some reason I find myself really attached to the photography pieces that people post. I don't get too involved with the community and the various issues with in, I use DA as a source of inspiration and nothing more!

ReplyDeleteIt's also because dA is filled with 13 year old artists who're just starting out. Most artists who do make money on dA are ones that have a ton of skill, or are really popular not just because of 'anime' although that is a really popular subject. I know a few artists on dA who don't draw anime but they have over 500,000 pageviews or have done work on films and comic books. It's that kind popularity that gets you commissions.
ReplyDeleteTrying to get commissions from dA is a waste of time because of it's terrible community. You offer commissions, they'll ask for trades or comment, "I don't have the money because my mommy wont let me get art online ): " "Do you do commissions for neopet/gaia money??" "I don't have money but do you want to do a trade instead?"
I moved to another art website that's more adult and I'm getting a ton of commissions. Maybe you should look else where on the internet. Saying that.
Commissions are hard to do during school. Homework in Animation is usually really demanding but so will the occasional customer that you might get. It's probably a good thing that you don't have any commissions to worry about on top of you're homework, especially when you have customers constantly pestering you about when their commission will be done. Some don't get the concept that you're in school and that school is ten times more importnat. I didn't start offering commissions until the summer when I didn't have school to worry about.
In a nutshell, dA is filled with young artists who're under the age of 15, try moving to a more adult community for art, and commissions are hard to do when you're in school.
